Julie Pentland
I am a clinical specialist nurse in Children’s Allergy at Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. I qualified at Teesside University as a Paediatric Nurse with an Advanced Diploma qualification and began working in Cardiology at the freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. After 5 years I then moved on to the Royal Victoria Infirmary Childrens Haemodialysis unit where I worked for a further 10 years. Working part-time gave the opportunity to work shifts in the paediatrics A& E which broadened my general Paediatric knowledge.
Over the past 6 years I have worked with the Allergy Team and am currently a Band 7 Allergy Nurse Specialist.
Studying at Northumbria University I completed my BSc Hons Degree in nursing studies in December 2017 with a 2:1. My dissertation was on Adrenaline Auto-injectors and training in emergency care settings. This involved providing training sessions each month to all paediatric staff on anaphylaxis and auto adrenaline injector administration. Currently am now studying towards a MSc in allergy at the University of Southampton.
In 2017, I attenmded the EAACI Annual Scientific Meeting where I presented a poster on Penicillin Allergy and the de-labelling of children wrongly diagnosed with this condition, where I was awarded a prize in my category. I recently followed this up with another E-poster at EAACI 2019 describing the rolling out of a penicillin de-labelling programme into primary care.
My main research interests are in drug allergy, and in particular, the over use of antibiotics. I am passionate about the impact one can make on the allergic child and their family and about improving their quality of life through the service we provide.
